A woman found dead in a west Las Vegas apartment fire on April 20 had been strangled, and her death is now ruled a homicide, according to the Clark County coroner’s office.

The coroner ruled Marrie Stewart’s death a homicide, citing she was strangled and did not die as a result of the fire. Instead, she died from strangulation and blunt force trauma, according to a report by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Just after 6:30 a.m. on April 20, police responded to an apartment fire at La Ville Estates, 10175 Spring Mountain Road, near Hualapai Way, on the west side of Las Vegas. Authorities found Marrie Stewart’s body in the master bedroom of her home. According to investigators, the fire started in the same room.

Marrie Stewart’s husband and daughter were home when the fire started. Her daughter was not hurt, however, according to police, her husband was found at the front door with superficial lacerations and taken to the hospital.

In April, when the fire broke out, the circumstances leading up to the fire and Marrie Stewart’s death were unclear.

Las Vegas Metro homicide Lt. Ray Steiber said there was a domestic issue before the fire started but added that police were not sure if that escalated to a physical fight. The cause of the fire was also undetermined. Prior to Marrie Stewart’s autopsy, investigators were unable to say whether Marrie died from other causes.

Lt. Steiber said local residents reported hearing gunshots around the time the fire started.

Marrie’s son, Rayveon Samuel, identified her as Marie Hall and offered a comment to a group of media outlets gathering around the apartment complex.

“I know for a fact, my mom could’ve been saved by her husband, and that’s all I’m going to say.”

Rayveon did not elaborate as to why he felt that way.

Southwest Gas spokesperson Sonya Headen said crews surveyed the area and confirmed that there wasn’t a gas leak and the meter was still intact, so the cause of the fire was not due to a gas leak.

Businessman Michael Leslie Bernback appeared on Millionaire Matchmaker four years ago looking for a date. The now 62-year-old wanted much younger women, what he called “baby breeders,” and disgusted the show’s host, Patti Stanger. Her instincts may have been right — Bernback is now facing rape charges.

The nature of those charges — among them eight felonies and three misdemeanors — hint at vile and disturbing crimes. Bernback is accused of raping three women, CBS Los Angeles reported. The alleged incidents happened last year and just this past August.

Michael Leslie met the women online, LAist added. And one of his neighbors in Sherman Oaks doesn’t seem very surprised that the businessman is now in jail, facing a $2.1 million bond. She saw many young women at his house — two a night, up to four times a week.

“I was waiting for it to implode.”

The felonies: one count each forcible rape, rape by use of drugs, rape of an unconscious person, forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by a foreign object, and attempted sodomy by use of force, and two counts of administering a drug to commit rape. The three misdemeanor counts are for possession of cocaine and Ecstasy.

Bernback is accused not just of rape, but of drugging one of this alleged victims and tying up the other. The assaults occurred in March and September 2014 and August 11. Michael Leslie was initially arrested and remanded to jail on $300,000 bond, but he was soon free. On Thursday, Bernback was taken into custody again after his bail was hiked.

According to LAist, Michael Leslie, a Brooklyn native, owns a golfing company, writes music, and claims to have created Chippendales, a fib the actual founders have contradicted publicly. When he appeared on Millionaire Matchmaker, Bernback told the lie about Chippendales, said he was worth $8 million and owned several houses. His last girlfriend, he claimed, was Miss Philippines 2004.

Stranger wasn’t impressed. She said he pushed her to set him up with a much younger woman, or a “baby breeder,” as the bachelor put it. The matchmaker set him up with a woman closer to his age, but they only went on one date. After the show, she didn’t hold back her criticism of Bernback.

“But I also have another douchebag this week, a Jewish douchebag, not good for the Jews. His name — Michael Leslie Bernback. He invented some review that was a rip off of Chippendale’s. He made his money that way. Now he’s trying to be a fledgling songwriter. Not so cool with what he does. And he comes on to me with the charm — ‘You look beautiful. You look skinny. How ’bout you going out with me?’ Not a chance. He’s this tall. He’s obnoxious. And his bull– is about this big. I’m not going out with him.”

Now, Bernback could face multiple life terms in prison if he is convicted of the charges.

‘Millionaire Matchmaker’s’ Michael Leslie Bernback Facing Disturbing Rape Charges is an article from: The Inquisitr News

On Thursday night at around 7:15pm on the University of Arkansas campus, it was reported that a man with a machete attacked two individuals in a wooded location near the campus. What’s particularly surprising is that this is one of many machete attacks that has occurred this year. In July, a 17-year-old boy in Ottawa was stabbed with a machete during a Canada day celebration in Winnipeg. In the article, David Larkins of the Ottawa Sun explains that the machete attack was one of two machete related incidents that occurred that day. And then earlier in June, a woman was slashed with a giant machete in Bryant Park in New York. According to CBC News, the woman suffered, “a substantial gash to her right arm and was rushed to a nearby hospital,” and the man who was responsible for the attack, apparently did not appear provoked before slashing her arm. And finally, just on Thursday, the suspect for a machete attack that occurred in Miami last June, was arrested, as indicated in Fox2Now.

The man responsible for the attack of the two individuals on the Arkansas campus, was also hurt during the machete incident. He supposedly had a campsite set up in the area, and the two victims confronted him telling him that he could not remain camped out in that spot. In a frenzy, the suspect began swinging his machete around and hit the two victims in the neck. During this attack process, his eye was injured and he was taken to the hospital. He was arrested shortly after the machete incident occurred. Ashley Kyle Pettey is the name of the man responsible for the attack, and was identified at 36-years-old.

Unfortunately, last year there was a homicide which occurred in same location of that campus. A man was found dead in the wooded area near the campus and an autopsy determined, “the cause of death to be homicide by blunt force trauma,”. It seems as though the attackers of Arkansas have a particular attachment to the use of melee, or machete-like weapons. Furthermore, it’s not as though officials have not attempted to alert citizens of the dangerous attacks in that area. Captain Gary Crain told the reporters at 5NewsOnline after the homicide that occurred last year,

“That area is not part of any trail system, is not part of any area where people are encouraged to go hiking, as a matter of fact there’s been efforts over the year to stop people from going there.”

The effort to clear the campus of homeless camps has been ongoing, but the issue is that if they move from that area, they will just go to another area and set up camp in a new location instead. The lessons learned here is that people should avoid the wooded place near the University of Arkansas campus to in turn avoid a very possible machete attack.

There’s A Campus Machete Attack Up In Arkansas So Hide Your Kids And Hide Your Wife is an article from: The Inquisitr News

In a shocking incident, decomposed body parts of a toddler were recovered from a lagoon located on Chicago’s West Side, ABC News reports. The body parts — which, according to initial reports, include the toddler’s decomposed feet and hand — were found in the Garfield Park lagoon on Saturday afternoon. The incident came to light after a person first saw the left foot of a toddler floating in the lagoon and called up 911.

After law enforcement officials turned up, the right foot and a hand was also recovered from the lagoon — 25 yards away from where the left foot was found floating. The news of this gruesome discovery has been confirmed by Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. He added that the toddler’s body parts were in a badly decomposed state. NBC News reports that a 20-pound weight was also found near the body parts. It is unclear at this stage if the weight has any connection to the apparent killing of the toddler. Investigators have resumed the search for any clues on Sunday and the Chicago Police Department has roped in the help of their marine unit divers to find if any body parts are still in the lagoon. As of late morning, no other body parts were recovered from the lake.

The police chief has added that several “items of interest” were recovered from the scene but declined to comment on the details. He did, however, add that the lagoon might be drained in order to ensure that there are no further remains in it.

Meanwhile, investigations are also on to find the identity of the toddler who died. Guglielmi added that detectives are sifting through the list of missing persons from the Chicago area to find if they could find any link.

Several officers and investigators were seen wading through the water on Sunday, feeling the floor of the lagoon with their hands. Others were seen walking alongside the lake and collecting possible pieces of evidence in a paper bag.

It is also unclear at this stage how the toddler died. It is expected that an autopsy would reveal more information regarding this gruesome incident.

Toddler’s Body Parts Found Floating In Chicago’s Garfield Park Lagoon is an article from: The Inquisitr News

A 7-year-old boy was killed while three others were wounded in what is being reported as a shooting incident in South Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to ABC News, the shooting happened during a birthday party celebration at around 9 p.m. on Saturday. The shooting took place in the front yard of a home. Another child and two adults were also injured in the shooting. Their injuries, however, are not of a life-threatening nature, confirmed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Deputy Chief Jeff Estes. The 7-year-old boy was later identified as Kevin Antonio Calderon Rodas. Following the shooting, Kevin was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.

The investigation is still on to find the gunman who was behind the fatal shooting. Police officials confirmed that they were using dog squads and helicopters to look for the suspect in the vicinity. They have also asked witnesses to come forward to reveal more details, an NBC News report said.

The killing of the 7-year-old comes in the same weekend where another three shooting incidents were reported from North Carolina in the span of a few hours. In a news conference on Sunday, Estes expressed his anguish over the killings.

“It’s a sad state of affairs in the city and our country when a 7-year-old boy can’t be free to celebrate a birthday party without being murdered,” he said.

The motive behind the latest North Carolina shooting incident remains a mystery. Seeing a rise in the spate of violence, officers were called in from days off and vacation to aid in the investigation process.

“We think it is an absolute tragedy that in Charlotte-Mecklenburg we are seeing this type of violence,” Estes said. “We will not rest or not stop until we do everything we can to put a stop to it.”

Other incidents of violence reported from North Carolina included another shooting incident where a woman was found dead from gunshot wounds — not far from the neighborhood where the 7-year-old was shot. Another man was also injured in the same incident, which is now being investigated as a drive-by shooting case. At this stage, there is no evidence to connect all of the shooting incidents in North Carolina.

In yet another shooting incident, a man was found dead — again from gunshot wounds early Sunday morning in east Charlotte. Before that, on Saturday, a man was admitted to a Charlotte hospital, where he later died from gunshot wounds.

Parents of a newborn baby fear their child was swapped by hospital staff and sold to traffickers. DNA tests revealed the child they were given was not theirs.

Richard Cushworth and his wife Mercedes Casanellas launched a frantic plea to find their son. They fear he was swapped with another child and claim their OB-GYN picked their newborn baby because the infant had light skin — worth a high price on the black market.

Richard and Mercedes live in the United States, but Mercedes is Salvadorian and she wanted to give birth to her baby in her home country of El Salvador.

After giving birth, the couple decided to have a DNA test when they returned to the U.S. because they noticed the infant didn’t look like either one of them.

To their horror, they were right — the baby was not their child.

Emotional and teary, Ms. Casanellas was interviewed by a local television station, according to a report by The Daily Mirror.

“We haven’t been able to sleep thinking about where he is, and who has him. We just want them to give us our son back.”

According to the family, they investigated all the other babies born at the hospital on the same day and found that all of the newborns were with their correct parents. This discovery reinforced their belief that their child was stolen.

Richard Cushworth commented about the horrific set of events.

“It’s a horrible situation. I have a child and I don’t know where he is. Someone took my child and I have no idea where he is, who is taking care of him, what has happened to him. Is he in the country? It’s awful.”

The couple accused Ms. Casanella’s obstretrician-gyneocologist, Dr. Alejandra Guidos, of masterminding the plot. Dr. Guidos was arrested on Thursday, according to their family’s lawyer, Francisco Meneses.

Ms. Casanellas claimed that, from the fifth month of her pregnancy, she remembered Dr. Guidos repeatedly told her that her baby would be dark-skinned, even though the father is white.

Mercedes explained the chain of events.

“I always thought that was strange. How would he know that from the ultra-sound scans, and why would he keep saying it? I was very stressed at first because the baby took a while to start breathing, but then I held him and remember thinking that he looked like my husband. He was very white and had similar features. I remember seeing his genitals and thinking that they were white and pinkish.”

Ms. Casanellas commented more about her suspicion.

“But then the anesthetist came and told me that I was very nervous and that they were going to give me something to put me to sleep. After that, I don’t remember anything, until I woke up the next morning. Someone took my child and I have no idea where he is, who is taking care of him, what has happened to him”

Mercedes recalls the strange circumstances taking place at the hospital.

“Around 8 a.m., they started to bring the babies to their mothers, and I waited for mine. But when I took him, I saw that he was very different to the one I had held in the delivery room. When I changed his clothes, I noticed that his genitals were very dark and not rosy like how I’d remembered. I said to the nurse, ‘look, his genitals are very dark’, and she told me, ‘no, that’s normal, that’s normal.'”

Ms. Casanellas took photos of her baby son immediately after the birth, proving that the baby was white-skinned.

Although they had doubts, the couple took the baby back home to Dallas, Texas, but over the coming months, family and friends also noticed the child did not resemble the parents and also had a darker color.

Ms. Casanellas talked about their shocking reality.

“I would take photos of him and put them next to my husband, trying to find something of us in him. I kept trying to convince myself that he was really ours, that over time we would begin to see a resemblance. But my motherly instincts kept telling me that he wasn’t mine.”

The couple finally found the courage to take a DNA test when the baby was three months old. The results showed he has a 0.00 per cent probability of being their son.

The couple returned to El Salvador in a desperate effort to find their baby.

The Daily Record reports that, initially, San Salvador’s Ginecologico hospital, considered the best private hospital in the country, denied that the baby could have been swapped, saying it was “impossible” due to their “high standards” of control.

However, following the family’s high-profile television interview, and after Dr. Guidos’s arrest, the hospital ordered an internal investigation and promised that the situation will be rectified.

El Salvador’s Attorney General ordered a criminal investigation into the baby’s disappearance amid claims a trafficking gang, led by Dr. Guido, has been operating inside the hospital.

Ms. Casanellas said, “I just want him to give me my baby back. I want to know that my child hasn’t been trafficked or any other crime committed against him. I need my baby, I’m just asking for my baby.”

Richard and Mercedes said that, if the true parents of the baby they were given are not found, they will raise him as their own.

Mercedes said, “If they can’t find his mother, he already has parents, us. We are taking care of him and, even though we know he isn’t our biological son, we still love him.”

Parents Tormented After Discovering Their Newborn Baby Was Swapped With Another Infant is an article from: The Inquisitr News

Early Saturday morning, Yvonne and Zachary Ervin awoke to find their two sons trying to kill them. Now, the parents are in the hospital while the children are in jail, facing serious felony charges.

Cameron, 17, and Christopher, 22, had allegedly ruptured their home’s gas line, swamping the inside with natural gas as they beat and stabbed their parents. Police say their ultimate goal was to burn down the house, WSBTV reported.

The attack began just before 8 a.m. At some point, Zachary was able to distract his sons while their mother called 911 to report that “her children were trying to kill her and her husband,” police spokesman Sgt. Rich Long told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

“She stated that her husband was distracting them so she was able to call for help. The call eventually went silent.”

The scene at the Ervin house, which neighbors reported as usually calm and the family happy, was alarming when police arrived. They found both Yvonne and Zachary severely wounded. Zachary was outside with one son, while Yvonne was inside with the other — the house smelled strongly of natural gas.

“Zachary came out of the garage and collapsed,” Long told CNN. “He had a lot of head and body injuries from blunt force trauma and stab wounds on his back. (Yvonne) also had blunt force trauma but not as severe as the father.”

Both parents have been hospitalized and are expected to survive.

Cameron and Christopher lived with their parents at a home near Atlanta, Georgia. Regarding the sons’ attack on their parents, neighbor Clint Miller told WSBTV that “They’re just an everyday normal family in the neighborhood.”

And police have not yet figured out what the young men’s motive would’ve been. Though the brothers have been cooperative and investigators have determined that they intended not just to kill their parents, but to incinerate their house as well, the motive is a mystery. But Long doubts it was spur-of-the-moment.

“There is no official motive at this point, but there has to be something more to this. I’m sure they didn’t just wake up and decide to kill their parents yesterday,” he said.

The brothers are now facing two counts aggravated assault and two counts first-degree arson, each. Though Cameron is only 17, he will be tried as an adult, per Georgia law.

As for their neighbor, Mr. Miller, he said the boys’ were always “very polite young men,” he told CBS46.

“That’s the last thing I would have expected out of those kids. I hope they understand that their parents gave them everything they could.”

‘Polite Young Men’ Brutally Beat, Stab Parents — Mother Calls 911 As Son Tries To Kill Her is an article from: The Inquisitr News

Dahlia Yehia, a 27-year-old American woman who was in Nepal since July to help people affected by the 2015 Nepal Earthquake was beaten to death and her body thrown in a river. According to CNN, Dahlia was beaten to death by a local teacher named Narayan Paudel, who has also confessed to the crime. He also confessed to having thrown Yehia’s body in a river. According to senior Nepali police officials, Dahlia was allegedly killed on August 4. However, Dahlia’s friends and family have claimed that she last made contact with them on August 6. Officials have still not revealed the motive behind the crime.

According to the New York Daily News, Dahlia, who is an art teacher, arrived in Nepal on July 20 with the intention of backpacking the landlocked country and also help earthquake victims in whatever ways possible. She was working at Sci-Tech Preparatory school in Austin, Texas, before coming to Nepal on a one-month visa.

Initial reports say that Dahlia eventually reached the town of Pokhara, where she intended to serve the people affected by the devastating earthquake. There, she met Narayan Paudel, who she was in touch with through a couchsurfing website. The website — which has not been revealed yet — connects travelers to local hosts for affordable accommodations.

The actual circumstances that led to Dahlia’s death remains a mystery. Her body has not been recovered, either.

Meanwhile, with no communication from Dahlia for an extended period of time, her friends and family reached out to the U.S. Embassy in Nepal for help, after which local authorities started an investigation. A Facebook page was also set up for her. A post on the page on September 4 confirmed the news about Dahlia’s death. The post read as follows.

“Recently, we received word from the US Embassy that Dahlia’s life has been taken from us. We do not have any further details at this time and are asking for everyone to respect the privacy for her family. We are devastated by this senseless loss of a beautiful life. For those who haven’t had the joy of spending time with Dahlia, know that she is a giver, lover, and humanitarian, who devoted her life to others less fortunate both domestic and abroad.”

Students at the school in Texas where Dahlia Yehia taught are planning a memorial for her. The Facebook page of the school also posted a statement that read as follows.

“The kids loved having her for their art teacher last year, especially the high school kids who went to the graffiti park downtown on city buses with their backpacks loaded with cans of spray paint!! We are all saddened by the loss of such a special spirit!”

Dahlia Yehia: Young American Woman In Nepal For Earthquake Relief Beaten To Death, Body Dumped In River is an article from: The Inquisitr News

A day after dismembered body parts of a child were found floating in a Chicago lagoon, more gruesome sights awaited Chicago police officials struggling to solve the mysterious case.

On Sunday, hours after the Inquisitr reported about a child’s severed leg and hand found floating in the lagoon, officers discovered more body parts — including the severed head of a child from the lagoon, USA Today reports. Earlier on Saturday, police officers responded to a 911 call made by a passerby who panicked after he saw body parts floating in the lagoon. Investigations began on Saturday and a few hours after the passerby spotted a leg, more body parts belonging to a child were found in the lagoon.

On Monday, officers returned to the lagoon in Garfield Park located on the city’s West Side. They are still trying to determine the identity of the victim who is thought to be between 2 and 4 years old. Earlier, plans were also made to drain the lagoon completely.

Chicago Police Spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told newspersons the difficulties involved in cases involving children.

“Cases involving children are exceptionally difficult for all affected — even police,” in a tweet he added that Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy had authorized the “full resources & weight of Chicago Police to gather evidence & find those responsible ‘whatever it takes.’ ”

Meanwhile, forensic experts at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office are examining the body parts in order to ascertain the identity of the young victim. DNA samples, fingerprints, and other vital data are being sourced, after which they will check for any matches in the missing children’s records. The cause of death is also a priority and is yet to be ascertained. Officers are also investigating any cases of missing children from the nearby areas.

According to Jason Ervin, the alderman for the district, the child is reportedly between 2- and 4-years-old. The gender of the child, however, is yet to be determined, he added.

“It is unthinkable that someone would dismember a child and throw them into the lagoon,” he told the Associated Press.

Members of the local community have expressed shock at the gruesome discovery and arrived at the park even as investigations continued. A member of the Garfield park Advisory Council told the Chicago Tribune that there have been several instances of bodies being recovered from the park over the years. This is, however, the first time that a child’s body was found there, making the the discovery particularly sad.

Lots of folks probably wish they were Nicki Minaj, but sometimes a little wishful thinking can lead to big problems. According to the Belfast Telegraph, a man in Northern Ireland was sentenced to serve four months in jail after repeatedly calling his area’s emergency services number and claiming he is the acclaimed recording artist. The aforementioned news outlet’s account of the situation refers to the man’s claims as a “hoax,” but any precise intent behind his actions is complicated by the outlandishness of his additional statements, which include a claim that he was being haunted by a “poltergeist.”

The defendant, 24-year-old Stephen Brown, had been previously admonished by the court for misusing emergency services and had been ordered to abide by an “Anti-Social Behavior Order (ASBO)” that banned him from making false calls. The instant offense resulted on Christmas Day when Brown made two false alarms within five minutes via the phone service.

“During the first call he claimed two men were making threats to kill him but was too intoxicated to provide more information.”

“A prosecutor said he rang again saying he wanted to cancel the first call and during the second call he also claimed to be U.S. pop star Nicki Minaj and said there was a poltergeist in his house.”

For his part, Stephen Brown has advised the Court that he is aware that he has a problem with alcohol and has requested treatment as opposed to incarceration. In a related report via the New York Daily News, Brown was quoted as saying that he is “his own worst enemy.”

The Court took Brown’s alleged abuse of the emergency services system very seriously, noting that the resources of first responders are stretched very thin nowadays. Judge Desmond Marrinan advised Brown that his hijinks were preventing police from responding to genuine life and death matters.

Nicki Minaj has not publicly commented on the matter of her impersonator although it’s widely known that she doesn’t take well to people who goof on her. Just last week, the diva publicly called out rival singer Miley Cyrus during the Video Music Awards telecast over some disparaging remarks made by Miley in the press. During an intense confrontation, Minaj yelled out, “Miley, what’s good?” and then shot a menacing look towards the VMA hostess. Better steer clear of that phone for a while, Stephen Brown.

Nicki Minaj Claim Earns Jail Time For Troubled Man is an article from: The Inquisitr News

A man in Pontiac, Michigan, walked in on an unexpected sight as he caught his father-in-law with his wife, the man’s own daughter. From that point, an altercation took place in which the older man ended up stabbing the wife’s husband.

According to CBS Detroit, a 25-year-old man arrived home around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday night. That was when he saw his wife and her father totally nude, and laying together in bed. Upon seeing this, the man woke up his father-in-law and they got into a fight which spilled outside the home.

While the fight was going on, 47-year-old Henry Allen Michael allegedly stabbed the young man in the back with a knife. Michael then left the scene by getting into his son-in-law’s vehicle and fleeing.

The younger man went to McLaren Hospital to be treated for his injuries after the stabbing, and that was when police arrived. They noticed he had a possibly perforated right lung, but the stabbing injury was non-life threatening.

The victim was interview and police tracked down his wife. Fox 8 reports that the 24-year-old woman said she was out drinking with her father and passed out upon arriving back at home. She knows nothing of what happened until her husband woke up her and her father.

Police were told by the woman that she believes she was sexually assaulted, and this led to her being examined by staff at the hospital. Further examination was done at the Haven START Program and she was then driven to the home of a relative.

The woman’s father, Henry Allen Michael, was later arrested by police and is currently in the Oakland County Jail on pending charges. Michael had been staying at the home of his daughter and son-in-law since being released from prison.

Michael did have an outstanding warrant on him for a probation violation at the time of the stabbing. He also has a long criminal history which includes robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Henry Allen Michael was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 1992 for robbery, and was released in 2012.

An investigation is ongoing by police in Pontiac, Michigan, as to what exactly transpired between Henry Allen Michael, his wife, and her husband. The stabbing is going to lead to at least one charge, but police state there could be further charges against Michael depending on results from his daughter’s hospital examinations.

Police have released the frantic 911 call made by a Georgia mother as her two sons were allegedly trying to kill their parents early Saturday morning.

Yvonne Ervin, 50, called 911 to report that she and her husband were being attacked in their Georgia home.

“Please send someone to my house. My children are trying to kill me.”

According to CNN, the terrified Georgia mother told the dispatcher that her two sons, Chistopher, 22, and Cameron, 17, had attacked her and her husband after drugging them with Xanax.

“I heard them saying that they put Xanax in our drink. That’s why we were so sleepy; we didn’t understand why we were so sleepy, but that’s why.”

The dispatcher asked the terrified Georgia mother how she knew it was Xanax.

“Because that’s what they said after they started attacking us. That’s what they said,” the frightened Georgia mother cried.

According to ABC News, the two Georgia boys Xanax in their parents’ food and believed that they were asleep. When they woke up, the two Georgia boys strangled their parents and tried to shoot them.

“They’re trying to strangle us and shoot us. They beat me up, they beat [my husband] up. They’re trying to kill us. Please hurry.”

“We have a shotgun and a pistol in the house, and I can’t find my pistol so I’m assuming they’ve taken it and they have the shotgun,” Yvonne told the Georgia dispatcher.

Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Rich Long told CNN that it was the brave Georgia parents’ quick thinking that might have saved their lives. According to People, the father, Zachary Irving, had made his way to the garage and distracted the Georgia boys long enough for Yvonne to call 911.

According to KTLA, the Georgia mother soon after told the dispatcher that her sons were climbing up the stairs.

Yvonne was heard crying out, “The police are on their way. The police are on their way.”

Then all communication with the Georgia dispatcher ended.

When police arrived at Georgia home, Zachary came out of the garage and collapsed.

“He had a lot of head and body injuries from blunt force trauma and stab wounds on his back,” said Long, according to CNN.

Cameron exited the house and was detained. When police entered the Georgia home, they “immediately noticed a large amount of blood on the floor,” according to the incident report.

Officers found the Georgia home in disarray, and they discovered a shotgun in the basement covered in blood. It was the only weapon found in the Georgia home.

The Georgia mother was discovered lying next to her bed. She suffered “blunt force trauma, but not as severe as the father,” Long told CNN.

Christopher was found lying face down in a bathroom upstairs, unresponsive. It is believed that he suffered injuries while Zachary fought him for the shotgun, according to KTLA 5. Both of the Georgia sons were immediately arrested.

Police said the brutal attack on the Georgia parents could have been much worse. According to Long, the boys had “introduced natural gas into the house” and were planning on burning the Georgia home down.

The Georgia sons have both been charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault and two felony counts of first degree arson. Under Georgia law, they will both be tried as adults.

“There is no official motive at this point, but there has to be something more to this. I’m sure they didn’t just wake up and decide to kill their parents yesterday.”

Yvonne has been released from a Georgia hospital and Zachary is still being treated for his injuries, according to ABC News.

During the 911 call, the dispatcher had asked the Georgia mother what she thought her son’s motive for the attack may have been. The Georgia mother said she did not know, and that perhaps the boys were doing it for insurance money.

Kendra Hatcher, a children’s dentist from Dallas, Texas, was shot and killed on September 3. She was just 35 years old. It was announced late last week that a suspect had been arrested, but some new information has since been uncovered, and makes the situation even more complicated.

Crystal Cortes, who is charged with being the driver of a Jeep used to flee the scene of the crime, was the police’s first arrest. She is 23 years old and claims, according to the police, that she was paid $500 to help her male accomplice make a quick getaway, though she says that the man was only supposed to rob Kendra Hatcher, not kill her. Cortes has confirmed that the perpetrator is male, but hasn’t yet revealed any other information about him.

Cortes has revealed information about someone else, though: a 33-year-old woman who hasn’t been publicly identified yet. The woman is a dental hygienist, so she works in the same field that Hatcher did; however, that isn’t her only tie to the late dentist. When Kendra Hatcher died she was dating someone, and this new suspect just so happens to be the ex-girlfriend of Hatcher’s beau.

This woman reportedly dated Hatcher’s boyfriend for about two years, and the relationship ended earlier in 2015. Crystal Cortes says that the ex-girlfriend was a part of the plot to rob Hatcher, and that the ex-girlfriend was supposedly using some type of software or app to track Hatcher’s iPhone for days leading up to her death.

Though she hasn’t been charged with anything yet, the police have searched the ex-girlfriend’s apartment and have confiscated her computer, hoping to obtain some more clues from there. Another eerie little detail from this crime is that the ex-girlfriend’s apartment is located less than two miles from the scene where Kendra Hatcher was killed.

With the popularity and wide use of iPhones these days, it is scary to think that there are malicious ways our own devices can be used to hurt us. A relative of Hatcher told Fox News that she doesn’t believe the original plan was just to rob Kendra; she doesn’t see any reason why the robber would need to take Kendra’s life in order to get what he wanted from her. Either way, the use of the phone surely would have helped the perpetrators to know where Hatcher would be and how they could get her alone to carry out their crime.

Antonio Beatty stands accused of murder for the death of a young father, whose body was found along the side of the road in Wilmington, North Carolina. And what he did just before facing a judge on murder charges is shocking.

On Tuesday morning, the family of that young man, Carlton Walker Whitley, gathered in a court room for Beatty’s first court appearance, WECT reported. Among the group was his fiancée, sister, and baby daughter. And they were greeted to a “cold-hearted” sight — Antonio smiled, laughed, and stuck his tongue out at them.

“He needs to be dead. He needs the chair,” said Whitley’ sister, Ebony Silman.

According to CBS News, Antonio Beatty is facing a life sentence in connection to Whitley’ shooting death; he’s been charged with first-degree murder. His alleged victim had a 5-month-old daughter, who was “all he cared about,” his fiancée Octavia Bryant told WWAY.

“My daughter shouldn’t have to grow up without a father because of someone else’s stupidity.”

Antonio himself justified his act, saying that he had been taunted while in jail. In a shocking statement to the press, he said he could’ve done a lot worse than stick out his tongue at the family of his alleged victims; “I mean I’m upset myself, but they ain’t have no right to stick their tongue out at me, they ain’t have no right to stick their middle finger up at me.”

His uncle, Anthony, apologized for his nephew, who said he’s a good guy whose never gotten in trouble. He, too, has two children, and is hurt by the prospect of losing them.

“So as far as what happened we do not know, he did it for sure, but if he did it I can assure ya’ll it wasn’t intentionally his fault,” he said. Further details about the Carlton’s death were not available.

Regardless of what Antonio’s family believes, Octavia and Ebony are going to do whatever they can to make sure the man accused of murder their loved one is punished.

“I feel like justice needs to be served. He don’t care obviously. He showed that his self in court that he don’t care, that he don’t have no remorse for what he did, and he needs to be charged. He needs to go down for this. This is not right. He took my daughter’s father from her. She don’t deserve that and then you’re going to stick your tongue out at a five-month-old? She is a baby!”

If convicted, Beatty could face the death penalty. Carlton’s family wants the toughest penalty.

Neighbors are in shock as they share memories and kind words about a family of five found dead in their $2 million home, nestled in a quiet, upscale street in Minnesota.

Police described the scene inside the home as “unspeakable” and “grim”, all five family members — a mother, father, and three teenagers — succumbed to unspecified, severe injuries, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

Though the crime scene is being called “complex,” thus far authorities have indicated the deaths may be a multiple murder suicide. Neighbor Doug Plocek spoke to several media outlets, echoing the words of many on this upscale street in Greenwood, Minnesota.

“The neighbors went into shock. To me, there was no indication whatsoever how that could have happened. We’ve never even had a break-in. To have something of this magnitude and it involves children — it just tears me apart.”

Though police haven’t officially released the names of the five found dead, word has leaked revealing their identities.

The five members of the Minnesota family were found dead after the father’s co-workers asked officers to check on him; he hadn’t reported to work in a couple days. On Sunday, a friend sent him a text and was surprised when he didn’t answer. The children also hadn’t been seen in school and another friend, Toni Plante, texted the mother but received no answer. One of the daughters had missed the first day of school.

When Minnesota police entered the home, they reportedly were greeted by a small dog, according to The Associated Press, but were soon confronted with carnage. One victim was found dead in a bedroom; once backup arrived, they found four more — three in the basement and a fifth in the garage.

All had suffered injuries described as traumatic and severe. South Lake Minnetonka interim Police Chief Mike Siitari said the scene was difficult for officers to deal with; in 30 years of service, Siitari had never seen anything so disturbing.

“There are no words to describe it. … It’s a tragedy. This is a tough one to handle.”

Some details have emerged about the lives of the five people who have been found dead in this unassuming, quiet Minnesota neighborhood. The father was a cardiac nurse who founded an online nursing business; the mother was described as lovely; the children were said to be polite. Overall, neighbors said the family seemed happy. Extended family declined to comment.

They moved to their home in Greenwood, Minnesota — a close-knit community of only 700 people — a few years ago, WCCO added. Though apparently wealthy, neighbor Jodie Gorence said they were kind.

“They were never showy. They were down-to-earth people. Wealthy people who were down to earth. Whatever the reason is. I hope they’re in a better place right now.”

Autopsies are pending and the school the children attended is offering counseling services to their classmates.

On the eve of the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, people in Washington had a security scare after the sound of gunshots rang through Washington DC’s Union Station. According to ABC News, the gunshots were fired by an armed guard who was near the train station after he witnessed a man stabbing a woman. Initial reports say that the guard fired shots at the man to save the woman from getting badly injured.

The security officer was associated with the Securities and Exchange Commission and was across the street from Union station when the stabbing incident happened. He rushed to help the woman and chased the man. According to police spokesperson Gwendolyn Crump, the security guard fired the shots after the knife-wielding man turned towards the guard, pointed the knife, and attempted to lunge at him.

Jeff Brown, D.C. police Commander later told reporters, “Obviously, with this being 9/11, fears were heightened and escalated. Several individuals fled from the scene. We secured the facility without any incidents.”

Ursula Lauriston, a 28-year-old magazine editor was at the Union Station when the incident unfolded, Yahoo News reports.

“I saw people running, and I just started running. It sounded like it was right next to me. People were completely confused as to what was going on, and no one knew whether to run or hide.”

The train station was briefly shut down and evacuated. After the area was deemed safe, it was reopened and trains are running normally, confirms Polly Hanson, an Amtrak spokesperson. Meanwhile, both the individuals injured in the stabbing incident were taken to hospitals. Their injuries are not of life-threatening nature, a police official confirmed.

The actual cause of the incident is still under investigation. However, it is believed that the stabbing was the culmination of a domestic dispute between the accused and the victim. The names of the individuals involved in the Union Station stabbing incident have not been revealed.

Home to Amtrak’s headquarters, the Union Station at Washington DC is a large transit hub and is located near the U.S. Capitol. An estimated 90,000 people pass through the station every day. The station is home to several retails shops and restaurants and is a favorite haunt for diners who are out on the lookout for a quick lunch.

On the day of the attack, Flags hoisted in two poles outside the main entrance of the Union Station were flying at half-staff in remembrance of the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Lansing firefighter Dennis Rodeman died doing a good deed. Police say the 35-year-old was killed Wednesday during an incident in which he was hit by a vehicle and the driver fled. Officials say the incident was deliberate. Rodeman was collecting donations by the side of the road for a muscular dystrophy research charity on Wednesday when he was intentionally struck by a man driving a pickup truck, Detroit Free Press wrote. Rodeman later died at the hospital from wounds he sustained in the incident. Grant Taylor, 22, was charged with murder on Thursday in connection with Rodeman’s death.

The Lansing firefighter’s tragic death came as a shock to many and Lansing Mayor Birg Bernero condemned the incident, calling it “a senseless, unthinkable tragedy.” At a press conference, Bernero gave the following statement.

“This is a shocking and unthinkable tragedy. … Dennis was cut down in an instant, doing what he loved, what he believed in, what he believed in most: helping other people.”

It is thought that the suspect and Rodeman previously had an argument.

“The suspect came by, was upset for whatever reason (and) circled back around before striking Rodeman with his vehicle,” Lansing Police Department Cpt. Jim Kraus said. Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney Stuart Dunnings III said the case remains under investigation, but there is enough evidence to charge Taylor with murder.

“The Lansing police patrol and investigation units are to be commended for their prompt response, and thorough investigation, of this tragic event,” Dunnings said. “The police also received critical assistance from members of the public. As always, first responders rely on an active and engaged citizenry, and Lansing stepped up to the plate in the investigation of this tragic loss.”

After Taylor fled the scene, two other drivers chased the attacker and managed to write down his license plate number. When police caught up to him, the suspect then fled his vehicle and was pursued by police on foot, after which he was arrested. According to People magazine, Taylor was charged with murder, third degree fleeing and eluding, and failing to stop at the scene of a personal injury accident causing death.

Lansing Fire Chief Randy Talifarro said Rodeman had only been married for two months and his wife was pregnant with their first child. He was a seven-year veteran of the fire department and had previously spent time in Iraq as part of the Marines.

Yelp is a bastion of Internet snark, a safe harbor for the aggrieved and the slighted, and the premier destination to read fake five star reviews purchased by enterprising local business owners. It’s also a rabbit hole that provides a bizarre, sometimes harrowing, look into the American penal system.

When most people hear about Yelp, they think about local business reviews, and that has been the main focus of the site since its inception. Restaurants, food, nightlife, and shopping top the review site’s list of main categories. But if you dig in deeper, you’ll find that Yelp also includes a “Public Services and Government” section, where you’ll find listings for everything from the local DMV and library to jails and prisons.

Of course, it’s just as easy to review these public institutions on Yelp as it is to submit a review on the local coffee shop. Anyone with access to the Internet can leave a Yelp review, and an increasing number of former inmates, families of inmates, and even employees of these facilities are choosing to lay it all out there.

And a lot of what they have to say isn’t very pretty.

New York’s infamous Rikers Island boasts a pretty mediocre two and a half star rating on Yelp. The headline review, written by a former inmate, isn’t very kind.

“Great vacation getaway if you like getting your butt kicked from both inmates and officers,” writes Leslie W. in the Yelp review. “Food is decent but I’ve had alot better from the dollar menu. Floors are dirty. I seen bed bugs crawling around the size if [sic] roaches. Gotta wash your under wears in the sink if your unlucky you will have to do them for others.”

At other times, former inmates use Yelp to offer advice to anyone unfortunate enough to find themselves at that facility in the future.

“I later learned to get a muslim halal card, and a jewish card, and know the kitchen staff to see which card would get me a better meal for the day,” writes Jason A., another former inmate at the prison. “Chocolate pudding was great.”

Despite the chocolate pudding, Jason’s Yelp review gave Rikers only a single star.

Another Yelp reviewer, Mike L., claims to be neither an inmate nor a corrections officer, but he paints a pretty grim picture of the food.

“I have a huge appetite so I figured how bad could the food be? Well, for starters the hot dogs are an unnatural white and they have bones in them! So be thankful next time you eat a boneless hotdog. Another frequent dish is the rainbow baloney that comes in various colors from an iridescent green to deep purple. Beefaroni doesn’t look too bad but it too has bones. The smelly beefaroni oils seem to permeate through the skin for a few days, probably why Rikers smells like it.”

While many of the prison reviews you’ll find on Yelp are from the point of view of former inmates, some are aimed at friends and family. One of Yelp’s “Elite” reviewers, a lawyer named Paul W., dedicated a review to the subject of how to get in, and out, of Rikers as a visitor.

“When you are called, slowly but calmly approach the window. Say “hello, Officer” and show your driver’s licence and state your destination. Wait. Wait. Tell her your destination in the prison. Wait. Tell her your destination again in the prison. Wait. Get a hand stamp and a plastic square with a number and a building name on it. Say ‘thank you, Officer'”

Paul doesn’t editorialize with his Yelp review. It’s just the straight facts on how to get in and out of the prison with the least amount of hassle, but he makes his opinon clear with the rating.

One star. Sorry Rikers, but this is how you get stuck with a two and a half star overall rating on Yelp.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Yelp without a healthy dose of snark and jokes. Reviewer Allysa P. gave the prison a five star review.

“Great island getaway right in my own backyard.. Beautiful on a summer night with a great view of Manhattan’s famous skyline. The dinner is nothing less than 5 star. Insider tip– Thursday is chicken night and it’s to die for. Only a pop, squat and cough away.”

Other correctional facilities have fared much worse on Yelp than Rikers.

“The County of Los Angeles suggested I stay here for 3 days. Day 1 I witnessed a man get stabbed with a splintered chicken bone,” writes Chris S. of the dismally rated LA County Jail. “Miss those duchess honey buns though. Minus 4 stars for the ambiance. Plus one star for the honey buns.”

The review received three useful ratings and one cool rating. Eleven other Yelp users thought that that getting stabbed with a chicken bone was hilarious.

That’s a pretty grim sense of humor there, Yelp

Reuben Johnathan Miller, a sociologist with the University of Michigan, told the Marshall Project why people may feel driven to review prisons on Yelp and other similar sites.

“We’re in this space where having an opinion is rewarded,” Miller told the Marshall Project. It has to do with the “democratization of expertise,” according to the sociologist, and the way that sites like Yelp place experienced users on an equal footing with so-called experts.

Former inmates, family members, and even facility employees feel driven to share their experiences on Yelp in this environment.

Earlier this summer, CNN reported that Yelp is struggling in terms of user growth and revenue forecasts. Yelp added a lot of data aimed at helping people find good doctors and hospitals in an attempt to draw in more users.

Somehow, the trend of reviewing prisons on Yelp doesn’t seem like it will have the same effect as allowing you to review doctors and hospitals. But if just one future inmate at Rikers gets to enjoy the great chocolate pudding thanks to a Yelp review, maybe it was all worth it anyway.

Ted Bundy, the infamous serial killer that killed over 30 women across five states in the 1970s, will be the next story to air on Reelz‘s Murder Made Me Famous. Tonight’s Murder Made Me Famous makes the fifth episode since its debut last month. Ted Bundy has been the subject of a couple of crime documentaries in 2015, including Investigation Discovery’s three-part scripted series Serial Thriller: Angel Of Decay and a background documentary entitled The Hunt For Ted Bundy.

Even after more than 25 years after his death, his horrifying case still puts the fear in American viewers. His evil acts began in 1974, when he savagely murdered many beautiful young women. His reign of terror lasted until 1978. One of the women who escaped Ted Bundy will be featured in tonight’s episode. It’s the story of Carol DaRonch, an 18-year-old girl who encountered Bundy outside of a mall. She had a strange feeling about Bundy before entering his vehicle, and it became terrifyingly apparent that she had made a mistake, just minutes after sitting in his car.

Luckily for Carol DaRonch, she was able to escape Bundy’s grip and make it to safety. One thing that stood out about serial killer Ted Bundy was his ability to lure women with his charm and calm demeanor. His good looks and his nice clothing made him appear attractive and trustworthy. The cunning Bundy would make up all sorts of sob stories to get the women in his car. He always kept a murder kit, too. The tools that he often carried included woolen ski mask, nylon stockings, handcuffs, crowbars, rope, cords, gloves, and trash bags, according to the Seattle Times.

In an interview with Ted Bundy, he stated that a killer doesn’t look like the monster that people imagine. “We are your sons, and we are your husbands,” the infamous killer stated. In another interview, Ted Bundy gave some insight on why he liked killing people, according to Ted Bundy’s Wiki.

“[Murder] is not just a crime of lust or violence. It becomes possession. They are part of you … [the victim] becomes a part of you, and you [two] are forever one … and the grounds where you kill them or leave them become sacred to you, and you will always be drawn back to them.You feel the last bit of breath leaving their body. You’re looking into their eyes. A person in that situation is God!”

One of the best movies made about the case is the 1986 movie entitled The Deliberate Stranger starring Mark Harmon. That miniseries, which aired in two parts in May of that year, marked the first time that Ted Bundy became a household name. Ted Bundy’s mother loved and supported her son until the end. For 34 years, Lewis Fogle insisted that he didn’t kill a 15-year-old girl named Deann “Kathy” Long in 1976. Someone finally listened.

Last month, Fogle’s conviction on a second-degree murder charge in connection with Long’s death was thrown out. And Monday, the county’s district attorney conceded that they didn’t have enough evidence to try Lewis a second time, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Fogle can never be tried again for the young girl’s death. While this court ruling means that Lewis spent 34 years in jail for a crime he didn’t commit, Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty still thinks Lewis, now 64, knows something that could help find her real killer.

“(Mr. Fogle) knows more and was involved in some manner. Whether we are able to prove that, that’s the evidentiary issue. Do I think he’s without blame? I can’t say that today, whether he was or was not.”

Dougherty told NBC News that between the August decision to vacate Fogle’s conviction and Monday’s decision, by his office, not to pursue new charges, he did consider trying him again. But decades after the girl’s death, he lacks the evidence to prove whether or not Lewis was involved as he believes.

“This is a question of what we can prove in court,” Dougherty said.

Deann’s murder is now an open homicide again, and the authorities intend to follow new leads and bring the real perpetrator to justice.

On July 30, 1976, in Cherry Tree, Pennsylvania, a man knocked on Long’s door and told her and her sister, Lola, that their older brother Leonard had been in a car accident, Trib Live recounted. Deann got in the car with the man, and the next day, her body was found nearby. She’d been raped and shot to death.

Five years later, Fogle was arrested alongside his brother, Dennis Fogle (convicted of sexually assaulting a child in 2010), Joseph Victor Receskey (who died five years ago), and John Robert Lynch (whereabouts unknown). Lewis was the only one convicted.

Five years after Deann’s death, a man in a psychiatric hospital implicated the trio while under hypnosis. Fogle also bore some resemblance to the mysterious man who knocked on the Long’s door that night. He was convicted on the testimony of three inmates who said Fogle confessed to the crime.

But Lewis always contended his innocence and spent years trying to prove it. Then he got in touch with the Innocence Project, and his long road to freedom was finally granted

“It pays off if you don’t give up,” he said.

The Innocence Project determined that evidence found in 2010 that tied Lewis to the crime was inconclusive. Later, another piece of evidence — which had been in the authorities’ possession but wasn’t properly inventoried — was discovered that couldn’t be linked to Fogle through DNA testing.

Now reunited with his family and facing the prospect of adapting to a world much different than the one he left in 1981, Lewis said he wants to help Deann’s family find the real killer, NBC News added.

“I want the people to know that I did not commit the crime, and a lot of people out there know I did not commit the crime. I’m hoping very strongly in the near future that the truth will come out with the names of the guilty parties, and I hope if any are still alive that they will be brought to justice.”
