Dr. Rashmi Patel, a popular Connecticut dentist, has been arrested for the death of a patient one year ago. According to The Monitor Daily, Rashmi Patel was in the process of extracting 20 teeth and inserting implants at the same time for a patient who had a poor health history. Police are currently charging the 45-year old dentist with tampering with evidence and criminal negligent homicide.

The well-known Enfield family dentist made news headlines in 2014, when a 64-year old grandmother named Judith Gan died while having her teeth pulled. Staff members told police that during the procedure Judith Gan began having difficulties—and it was apparent. According to Lancaster Online, witnesses reported that her skin turned a different color, and the distressed patient began making gurgling sounds while under sedation. His assistants advised him that she was having an issue, but Patel continued on with the procedure without getting the patient the proper help.

By the time 911 was called her oxygen levels had already dropped to dangerously low levels. She was transported to the hospital, where she later died, leaving her family and friends outraged that the dentist would suggest having so many teeth pulled at one time when her medical history indicated that she was a high-risk patient.

Medical records show that Judith Gan had a stroke and a heart attack in the months prior to the extractions. After a thorough review of his case, Rashmi Patel had his dental license suspended, but now Enfield police have charged him with homicide. Patel, who has already posted the $25,000 bail, is adamant that he is innocent and followed proper procedure. His practices, located at 2119 East Main Street and 71 Hazard Avenue, offered general services as well as cosmetic dentistry and sedation dentistry.

His website Enfield Family Dental Care states the following about him,

“[He] received his dental training at the University of Washington graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a minor in Endodontic/Oral Biology. Dr. Patel did his General Practice Residency/Anesthesia (IV) and ACLS Certification at St. Barnabas Hospital, Bronx, NY.”

The website Dear Doctor has since removed information about him from the site. Inquisitr reported in December 2014 that a 7-year old boy from India had 80 teeth pulled.
